In the wake of ongoing student demonstrations and accusations of police misconduct, Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant has reaffirmed the Supreme Court’s dedication to upholding citizens’ rights and delivering justice through the legal system. He addressed the public, with a particular focus on young people, emphasizing the court’s commitment to hearing every petition that is filed in accordance with legal procedures.
The CJI highlighted that the judiciary remains accessible to all individuals, assuring that justice will be served wherever it is justified. He clarified misconceptions regarding the court’s previous actions, noting that the Supreme Court did not refuse to address the matters in question. According to CJI Kant, the court had not received a formal petition at the time, only a representation, which does not satisfy the criteria necessary for initiating judicial proceedings.
Following the formal submission of new petitions that allege police misconduct during the protests on July 20, the Supreme Court has agreed to schedule these cases for a hearing on Monday. This development comes after concerns were raised about the authorities’ handling of the protests, prompting citizens to seek judicial intervention.
CJI Surya Kant also warned against misinformation and inaccurate media reports that suggested the court had declined to hear the case. He reinforced the judiciary’s openness and willingness to engage with any properly filed legal matters, stressing the importance of truthful reporting in maintaining public trust in the judicial process.
