Delhi Metro Reaches Record 82.4 Lakh Riders During DTC Bus Strike

The Delhi Metro has emerged as a crucial component of the city’s public transportation network, particularly during times of disruption. This role was underscored on September 17, when the metro system recorded its highest-ever single-day passenger footfall, with 8,244,903 boardings. The surge came amidst ongoing challenges faced by commuters due to a strike by private agency drivers working with the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC), which left thousands of buses off the roads.

As the strike entered its fourth day, the absence of these buses placed increased demand on alternative public transport options. In response, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) took proactive measures to accommodate the influx of passengers. The organization boosted its services by operating 20 additional train trips and deploying eight extra trains to meet the heightened demand, particularly during peak travel hours.

To ensure smooth operations and manage the increased passenger load, the DMRC collaborated with the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF). Together, they enhanced efforts to regulate passenger movement and maintain security across the metro network. This coordination was essential in handling the record numbers efficiently while maintaining safety standards.

The record-breaking footfall highlights the reliance of Delhi’s commuters on the metro system, especially when other modes of public transportation become unreliable or unavailable. With its extensive reach across the Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR), the metro continues to serve as a vital lifeline for the city’s residents, enabling them to navigate the city even in challenging circumstances.
