IndiGo, India’s largest airline, has decided to temporarily halt its Mumbai-Manchester route starting August 31, 2026. This decision is driven by ongoing airspace restrictions, which have resulted in longer flight durations, as well as rising operational costs. The airline cited ongoing international aviation challenges, such as geopolitical tensions, increased fuel prices, and route disruptions that have substantially escalated the expenses of running long-haul flights.
As a consequence of this suspension, IndiGo will be returning one of the six Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft it had leased from Norse Atlantic Airways. These aircraft were initially acquired in early 2025 to support the airline’s expansion into European markets ahead of the anticipated delivery of its own Airbus A350 fleet. Despite the suspension, IndiGo assured that its other international long-haul services would continue without interruption.
IndiGo’s foray into the European market has been met with strong demand, establishing a solid foothold for the airline in significant international markets. However, the financial viability of the Manchester route has been compromised by extended flight times due to airspace limitations, coupled with increasing aviation turbine fuel costs and currency exchange fluctuations. Abhijit Dasgupta, the Senior Vice President of Network Planning and Revenue Management, described the move as a regrettable but necessary response to the current operational climate. He emphasized the positive customer response to the route and expressed the airline’s commitment to resuming the service when conditions are more favorable.
In addition to suspending the route, IndiGo is looking into other ways to maintain its partnership with Norse Atlantic Airways and continue its long-term international expansion strategy. The airline remains dedicated to its growth ambitions despite the current setbacks.
IndiGo has assured that passengers impacted by the suspension will receive advance notifications and support, including alternative travel arrangements or refunds where applicable. The airline remains committed to minimizing inconvenience to its customers while navigating the challenges currently facing the aviation industry.
