In a groundbreaking move towards eco-friendly rail transport, India has introduced its inaugural hydrogen fuel cell-powered train. This pioneering development was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Jind, Haryana, underscoring India’s commitment to advancing green energy technologies.
The initiative comprises a comprehensive hydrogen ecosystem, including on-site hydrogen production, a refuelling station, and a locomotive running on fuel cells. The hydrogen is generated through an electrolyzer, after which it is compressed, stored, and transferred to the train using a specialized hydrogen refuelling station.
Key components of the refuelling infrastructure include high-pressure compressors and hydrogen dispensers. An automated fuel management system oversees the entire process of compression, storage, and dispensing, all while maintaining stringent safety protocols during refuelling.
This project is a testament to India’s burgeoning expertise in building domestic hydrogen infrastructure and aligns with the country’s National Green Hydrogen Mission. Plans are in place to extend similar hydrogen refuelling systems to heritage railway lines such as the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, the Kalka-Shimla Railway, and the Nilgiri Mountain Railway.
Hydrogen fuel cell trains function by merging hydrogen with oxygen to generate electricity, emitting only water vapor as a byproduct. This technology presents a sustainable alternative to diesel-driven trains and is poised to be instrumental in curbing carbon emissions in the transportation sector.
