In a bid to bolster economic ties, India’s Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal recently engaged in separate discussions with Finland’s Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Riikka Purra, as well as the Minister of Economic Affairs Sakari Puisto. These meetings aimed at enhancing trade and investment links between the two nations, highlighting the commitment to fortify economic collaboration.
The dialogue primarily concentrated on fostering partnerships in vital sectors such as digitalisation, innovation, research and development, and startups. Both parties expressed a keen interest in advancing business partnerships and delved into the potential for cooperation in cutting-edge fields, including artificial intelligence, 6G, quantum technologies, semiconductors, space exploration, and sustainability.
A significant aspect of these discussions revolved around the India-European Union Free Trade Agreement (FTA). Both countries evaluated how this agreement could amplify bilateral trade, draw in investments, and unlock new business opportunities. The proposed FTA is seen as a pivotal step towards enhancing economic interconnections and offering a robust framework for cross-border commercial activities.
These meetings occur amidst ongoing negotiations between India and the European Union, focusing on establishing a comprehensive trade agreement. The overarching goal is to reinforce economic relations and promote collaboration across strategic sectors, reflecting a shared vision of mutual growth and prosperity. As talks progress, both sides remain optimistic about the potential benefits that such an agreement could bring to their respective economies.
