The leaders emphasized their shared commitment to maintaining a free and rule-abiding Indo-Pacific region amidst concerns over economic coercion and regional developments in the East and South China Seas. As part of their strategic alignment, Japan and India plan to fortify supply chains in crucial sectors like semiconductors and critical minerals.
The partnership between the two nations will see an expansion in military collaboration, with plans to conduct more joint exercises and enhance cooperation in naval vessel maintenance and defense equipment development. A significant aspect of this enhanced partnership is the upcoming “two-plus-two” dialogue, where foreign and defense ministers from both countries will convene later this year to further discuss and solidify these strategic initiatives.
Economically, the summit bore fruit with Japanese and Indian businesses signing 129 memorandums of understanding that represent a combined investment of approximately ¥2 trillion ($12.4 billion). These agreements cover a wide array of sectors including semiconductors, artificial intelligence, automotive manufacturing, and various advanced technologies, highlighting the expanding economic synergy between the two nations.
The collaboration in technology is set to take a significant leap as the countries agreed to bolster cooperation in artificial intelligence. As part of this initiative, there is a plan to bring 500 Indian AI specialists to Japan by 2030. This move aims to foster joint research and innovation, underscoring the growing importance of emerging technologies in the bilateral relationship.
