Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Indonesia with the aim of strengthening India’s strategic, economic, and maritime ties with this key partner in the Indo-Pacific region. As the two largest democracies in the area and G20 members, India and Indonesia are eager to enhance cooperation across various sectors, including trade, technology, digital governance, healthcare, defence, and maritime security. This visit follows Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto’s trip to India in January 2025, during which both nations celebrated 75 years of diplomatic relations and signed agreements related to health, digital collaboration, maritime security, and cultural exchanges.
Despite the strong historical bond and mutual interests, bilateral trade between India and Indonesia hovers around $30 billion. Both countries are keen to tap into greater economic potential. India’s focus includes boosting investment in Indonesia, particularly in areas like critical minerals, manufacturing, renewable energy, and food security. The visit aims to further these economic engagements and unlock new opportunities for growth.
Digital collaboration is anticipated to be a significant area of focus, with Indonesia showing a keen interest in India’s Digital Public Infrastructure and digital commerce initiatives. Both nations are exploring partnerships in fields such as artificial intelligence, fintech, cybersecurity, digital payments, and support for small businesses. This digital synergy is expected to bolster technological ties and foster innovation between the two countries.
Another priority on the agenda is maritime security, with both countries planning to enhance cooperation in the strategic Strait of Malacca, improve naval collaboration, and expand defence-industrial partnerships. Indonesia’s efforts to diversify its defence suppliers could present new opportunities for India’s defence industry, further solidifying the bilateral defence relationship.
The visit also aims to boost people-to-people connections through stronger academic, business, and cultural exchanges. By fostering these relationships, India and Indonesia hope to build a more comprehensive and enduring partnership that benefits both nations in the long term.
