During a harrowing mid-flight incident on a flydubai plane from Dubai to Tel Aviv, Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar faced a life-threatening attack from his co-pilot. Despite sustaining multiple injuries, Machchhar managed to regain control of the situation, prioritizing the safety of the 182 passengers on board.
The Boeing 737 was forced into a steep descent, prompting Machchhar to open the cockpit door to allow passengers to intervene. Passengers quickly restrained the co-pilot, an Omani national, enabling the aircraft to be diverted safely to Tabuk in north-western Saudi Arabia, where it made an emergency landing. Following the incident, the co-pilot was detained in Saudi Arabia as investigations into the motive of the attack continue.
Speaking from a hospital in Abu Dhabi, Machchhar recounted the ordeal and shared that he drew strength from reciting the Hanuman Chalisa, a Hindu prayer, which provided him with courage during the critical moments. His determination to safeguard the passengers was underscored during a video call with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, where he expressed his resolve to protect those on board despite his injuries.
Captain Machchhar, originally from Mumbai, has been with flydubai for four years, bringing with him over a decade of experience from his time with SpiceJet, where he amassed thousands of flying hours. The incident highlights the unpredictable challenges pilots may face and underscores the importance of resilience and quick thinking in aviation.
