India-New Zealand Trade Pact Begins; EU, Canada, Chile Negotiations Progress.

As India continues to expand its global trade relationships, a significant milestone is set for October 20, when its Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with New Zealand will be enacted. This development marks a notable step in India’s broader strategy to strengthen its international economic ties. Under the terms of the agreement, India will offer New Zealand duty-free access for all Indian exports, a move expected to bolster trade between the two nations.

The agreement, originally signed in April, also lays the groundwork for substantial investment flows, with New Zealand committing to facilitate $20 billion in investments into India over the next 15 years. Such economic collaboration underscores the growing partnership between the two countries, although India has prudently chosen to exclude certain sensitive agricultural products, such as onions, chickpeas, peas, corn, almonds, and sugar, from the duty-free arrangement to safeguard its domestic agricultural sector.

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has highlighted that this agreement is part of a larger effort to advance India’s trade negotiations on multiple fronts. Currently, India is accelerating its discussions with the European Union, Canada, and Chile, aiming to forge comprehensive trade partnerships. Notably, negotiations with Canada are progressing into their fifth round in October, with both sides striving to expedite their Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement.

Simultaneously, talks with Chile are moving forward, and India anticipates making headway in its trade discussions with the European Union before the year concludes. These initiatives reflect India’s strategic focus on diversifying and deepening its economic collaborations globally, positioning itself as a key player in the international trade arena.
