In a significant move to boost regional connectivity and economic growth, the West Bengal government is set to collaborate with the central government to develop an airport in Purulia district. The project falls under the UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik) scheme, a central initiative aimed at enhancing air travel accessibility across India.

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced that a formal agreement will be signed on September 28, marking a pivotal step towards establishing the new airport. Preparations are reportedly in place, with the state government having already applied for the necessary licenses. Discussions have also included representatives from the civil aviation authorities, indicating a coordinated effort to bring this project to fruition.

The proposed airport is expected to significantly improve air connectivity in Purulia, a district known for its tourism potential. Additionally, the airport is anticipated to act as a catalyst for local infrastructure and industrial development, aligning with broader economic goals.

Beyond enhancing connectivity, the West Bengal government is actively seeking to attract substantial investments to the district. According to Adhikari, the focus is on key sectors such as defence, steel, cement, and solar energy. The potential for investment in Purulia is projected to reach approximately ₹1 lakh crore over the next year, underscoring the region’s growing importance as an economic hub.
