Malaysia is gearing up to support Nepal in the aftermath of severe floods and landslides by preparing to send a team of DNA experts. The deployment awaits approval from Nepal, as Malaysia aims to assist in identifying victims of the natural disasters. According to Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan, the specialists are set to commence DNA identification efforts once search and rescue missions conclude. The process will involve matching DNA from recovered bodies with samples obtained from the families of missing Malaysian nationals.
Currently, Malaysia has collected DNA samples from the families of 55 Malaysians who are still missing in the wake of the tragedies. The urgency of the situation led to some bodies being buried quickly due to limited facilities, making DNA testing a critical step for proper identification. This initiative underscores Malaysia’s commitment to bringing closure to affected families by confirming the fate of their loved ones.
The Malaysian team is composed of 11 personnel and is equipped with 12.4 tonnes of rescue gear, highlighting the comprehensive nature of their mission. Among the equipment are detection devices, advanced communication systems, high-capacity drones, and specialized tunnel-rescue tools. The team is also supported by a four-wheel-drive vehicle and a 10-tonne truck, ensuring they are well-prepared to handle the challenging conditions on the ground.
By integrating search, rescue, and DNA identification efforts, Malaysia hopes to not only find the missing victims but also to provide certainty and comfort to the families anxiously awaiting news about their relatives. The collaborative efforts between Malaysia and Nepal are crucial to addressing the humanitarian needs resulting from these natural disasters.
