India and Switzerland have taken significant steps to enhance their bilateral relationship by signing five new agreements. This development follows discussions between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Swiss President Guy Parmelin, focusing on expanding cooperation in various sectors including trade, defence, nuclear energy, and technology. These agreements aim to improve market access for Indian exports and encourage Swiss investment, marking a notable moment as Switzerland celebrates the first anniversary of the India-European Free Trade Association (EFTA) Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement.
The agreements encompass areas such as migration and mobility, young professionals, transportation, research, innovation, and technology transfer. One of the key agreements is a migration and mobility partnership, which seeks to foster cooperation while addressing issues like irregular migration and human trafficking. This includes provisions for multiple-entry visas of up to five years and renewable permits for students. Further, a separate agreement facilitates the exchange of young professionals, allowing up to 300 individuals from each country to engage in temporary employment, thereby gaining valuable professional and language experience.
In the realm of defence and nuclear energy, both countries have committed to exploring enhanced cooperation, including military exchanges and defence production. The agreements also pave the way for joint research projects in critical areas such as health, clean energy, and space. Additionally, the two nations plan to collaborate on developing transportation technologies and sustainable infrastructure, with a focus on electric vehicles, tunnels, and other mobility systems.
The discussions and agreements are expected to bolster collaboration between research institutions, businesses, and technology companies in both countries. This is particularly significant as India looks to expand its market presence in Switzerland across sectors like agriculture, pharmaceuticals, textiles, and engineering goods, while Swiss companies are encouraged to invest in biotechnology, life sciences, banking, insurance, food processing, and sustainability.
The meeting between Prime Minister Modi and President Parmelin also touched on global and regional issues, including the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and West Asia. Both leaders emphasized the importance of dialogue and diplomatic efforts to foster peace and stability in these regions.
